The Borough Vs Weybourne FC

The first game of the season was an away encounter with The Borough, a team we beat on both occasions last season however would prove to be tougher opposition as most of the boys were expecting. Weybourne started the brighter of the two, with O'Donnell and Marsh causing The Borough defence a few issues. Chances fell to Macca, O'Donnell, and Marsh all in the first half an hour but composure infront of goal was proving to be an issue with all shots being blazed over the bar. Weybourne kept piling on the pressure with Macca charging through on goal, only to be stopped by a vital last ditch tackle from a Borough defender, the striker looked like he had just taken one touch too many. It was a Weybourne corner that indirectly led to the first goal, the corner was played low and short and was easily intercepted, setting up a counter attack for the Bourough. With many of Weybourne's players out of position the Borough piled forward in numbers, pulled a ball across the box and were handed an easy goal, with their first real chance of the game. The game turned a bit scrappy with a few needless fouls being given away by Weybourne, Hepple was lucky to escape a yellow card after a fairly reckless challenge on Bourough's left winger. Weybourne really needed to pick themselves up, Marsh did just this, going on a dazzling run past 3 players into the box, followed by the perfect pull back to Macca who simply needed to slot in from 8yards with the keeper beaten, the striker blazed it over the bar in an unbelievable miss, he dropped to the floor in disgust with himself. More Weybourne pressure led to another few half chances with Gregor forcing the first real save from the Borough keeper, however Weybourne could not turn their dominance into goals, and the half time whistle blew.

The 2nd half began in the same fashion as the first had ended, Weybourne dominating posession and creating a few half chances. A free kick in a good position was blazed over by Stoner and then Marsh when it had to be re-taken. Bourough's keeper fumbled a few balls but there was nobody following up, and once again it was Weybourne who were exploited on the counter attack, a swift few balls forward and a couple of slips at the back let Bourough in again, they took their chance well to take a 2-0 lead. Weybourne now had a mountain to climb, the Gaffa changed the formation to 3-5-2 with Emerson coming off for Davies. and Heppell pushing up into a DM role to give Gregor and Stroner more freedom moving forward. 5 minutes later both Macca and Lau were subbed, with Munford coming on at RW and Neudegg at CF. Tempers were beginning to flare as Weybourne were frustrated, Marsh was involved in a fiery interchange that led to the referee warning both players. A few minutes later Munford made an instant impression, threading a perfectly weighted through ball down the line to Neudegg, who cut in well and fired a low cross across the box, O'Donnell came charging in at the far post screaming for it and smashed one home, 2-1 and Weybourne were hungry for more. No more than a minute after the restart, the impressive Munford once again hit the line with another pinpoint ball, Neudegg was through, coming in at an angle he shot low, the keeper palmed it away but only into the path of Marsh who tapped into the gaping net, a goal that was much deserved for the striker, 2-2 with 20 minutes left. Weybourne were flying and it was only a matter of time until the next went in, Munford cut in from the wing and hit a curling shot from outside the box that was heading for the top corner, Borough's keeper made a flying save to touch it round the post for a corner. Munford stepped up and whipped in the corner to the back post, where Heppell found himself all on his own to head in to the roof of the net, a pinpoint cross and a well executed header, 2-3. Borough couldnt believe what had hit them, and were all but out of the game, with Weybourne looking to score with every attack, and their defence looking strong whenever Borough threatened, Watts and Price both getting stuck in well. Then another flowing Weybourne move saw Munford chip over to Gregor, who steered the ball to Neudegg who finished impressively into the corner with his left foot, 2-4. The final whistle followed shortly after and Weybourne had a well deserved victory.
